Pontifical Low Mass at WYD

His Excellency, Bishop Marc Aillet, Ordinary of Bayonne, offered a Pontifical Low Mass at the Church of Saint Francis de Sales for Juventutem pilgrams at World Youth Day. Juventutem  is an international movement that was established in 2004 of young Roman Catholics between the ages of 16 to 30 who are attached to the Traditional Latin Mass (Extraordinary Form).  The aim of the society is to foster and strengthen relationships between these young people at the national and international levels, and to encourage and assist them in developing their faith.

Vatican Encourages Work of Latin Mass Youth Group

BROOKLYN, NY (MARCH 20, 2008) – With World Youth Day 2008 approaching fast, many Catholic youth groups are gearing up for the trip to Australia and the chance to meet other young Catholics from all over the world – as well as the Holy Father. The International Juventutem Federation is among those going to Sydney, and has planned an extensive two-week program showcasing the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (also known as the “Latin” or “Tridentine” Mass).

In 2007, Pope Benedict issued a new document that liberalized the use of this rite in the Church, entitled “Summorum Pontificum.” The Juventutem pilgrims are eager to show their appreciation for this momentous pronouncement through their program at WYD 2008. Juventutem is comprised of young Catholics from all over the world who have found the rich traditions of the Church to be a source of joy and grace in their lives.

Founded in 2005, Juventutem has now become an international youth movement whose goal is the daily sanctification of Catholic youth through Roman traditions. It is represented on the local level by numerous national groups. In a recent letter to the International Juventutem Federation, Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos (President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei) writes, “You are young Catholics, loyal to the hierarchy of the Church and attracted by the ‘forma extraordinaria’ of the Roman liturgy, in particular by the Missal of the Blessed John XXIII. I encourage you in your aim, that is to say your sanctification through the Roman traditions of the Church.” Juventutem hopes to bring greater awareness of these traditions to fellow Catholics at World Youth Day.

Spaces are still available with the Juventutem USA group, and more information can be found at http://www.juventutemusa.org/. The group will be led by Rev. Fr. Denis Buchholz of the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest. This priestly order, founded in 1990, is entirely devoted to the liturgical forms of the extraordinary rite. Fr. Buchholz was part of Juventutem at WYD 2005 and is currently pro rector of Old St. Patrick Roman Catholic Oratory in Kansas City, MO. The schedule of events includes daily Mass according to the extraordinary rite; lauds, vespers, and compline on most days; catechesis and rosary; attendance at the Papal Mass; and of course, some extra time to explore Australia. The all-inclusive price for the 20-day trip is $2900.
